PTC began as a clearing house for ACH Transactions. Participating retailers sent check account information to PTC's centralized database which then cleared these transactions through the Federal Reserve System. The results was faster settlement with fewer return items, and the ability to collect donations repetetively without monthly entry.

The idea of ACH clearing check information was so successful that PTC's database now contains over 130 million check records.
